About Land Use & Transportation

Working in coordination with city, regional and state government partners, about  300 Land Use and Transportation employees provide  transportation, planning, permitting and road maintenance services for all who live, work and travel in Washington County.

Mission & Organization

The Department of Land Use & Transportation's mission is twofold:

  • Building and maintaining a great transportation system
  • Planning and protecting the uses of the land

The Department of Land Use & Transportation staff is committed to:

  • Supporting complete, equitable and welcoming urban unincorporated and rural communities through planning and permitting services​
  • Balancing growth, housing needs and economic goals with safety and natural resources​
  • Protecting farm and forest land​
  • Planning, building and maintaining a safe and connected County-managed transportation system​
  • Improving internal systems and enhancing staff capabilities and capacity​
  • Providing excellent service​
  • Ensuring transparent and inclusive community engagement ​
  • Enhancing collaboration with other County departments and other partners​

LUT has five divisions made up of multiple workgroups or sections:

  • Administrative Services 
  • Planning and Development Services  
  • Capital Project Services
  • Engineering, Traffic and Survey
  • Operations and Maintenance
