Housing Services

The Department of Housing Services creates pathways out of homelessness, promotes housing stability, and invests in affordable communities for Washington County and our residents.

We envision a Washington County where everyone has an affordable home with the supports and opportunities each of us needs to thrive.

The Washington County Department of Housing Services, which includes the Housing Authority of Washington County, serves our community through rental assistance, affordable housing opportunities, and coordination of services for people experiencing homelessness.

The Department of Housing Services is a unique organization focused on the full continuum of housing stability—from street outreach and shelter access to long-term rent assistance and affordable housing. We administer rental housing and rental assistance to more than 7,000 households across Washington County. We also support a comprehensive system of care that meets the needs of people experiencing homelessness and connects them with immediate shelter and housing services.

Kendra's Story

Kendra at home

Kendra was approved for the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) rental assistance program in late 2022. With perseverance and dedication, Kendra was accepted to an internship program working with people experiencing homelessness in our community, through Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization. Since engaging in the internship, Kendra has changed her career goals and now envisions herself working with foster and at-risk youth. With as many as 20,000 youth aging out of foster care each year nationwide, and up to 46% of these youth experiencing homelessness, we need more people like Kendra.
