A wide selection of housing opportunities for older adults exists in Washington County, whether you are looking for affordable independent communities or residential settings to provide additional care.

Each option provides varying levels of care and monthly costs. Financial assistance through Medicaid Long Term Care (LTC) Services may be available to help cover payment for housing and care at certain facilities. Eligibility requirements apply.

Independent living and retirement communities

  • For older adults (generally age 55+).
  • May be market-rate rentals or offer subsidized rent; options may include single-level accessibility.
  • Amenities such as housekeeping, transportation and recreational activities may or may not be available.
  • These communities are not licensed, do not include help with personal care, and Medicaid LTC assistance is NOT available.
  • Washington County Housing Services also provides general information about affordable housing options, income requirements, and how to apply. Sites may have waiting lists.

Assisted living facilities

  • Optimal for those who want to remain as independent as possible and can direct their own care.
  • Personal care assistance is available for additional fees; housekeeping, meals and some transportation are typically included.
  • Units are private with bathroom and kitchenette.
  • Licensed by the state of Oregon. Medicaid LTC assistance is available for some facilities.

Adult foster care homes

  • Single-family homes licensed to provide care to five or fewer residents.
  • Caregivers are available 24 hours a day to assist with housekeeping, meals, activities, and personal care. Care needs can range from minimal to heavy.
  • Typically provide private bedrooms. Bathrooms may be shared. Rest of the home is shared space.
  • Licensed by the state of Oregon and Medicaid LTC assistance is available for many homes.

Residential care facilities and memory care

  • Housing and supportive services for six or more residents who do not require 24-hour nursing care.
  • May range from private apartments to shared bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Monthly fees vary greatly depending on amenities and care services.
  • Memory care communities specialize in care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia and have special requirements to support these individuals.
  • Licensed by the state of Oregon. Medicaid LTC assistance is available for some communities.

This site offers general information such as owner/administrator and contact information, summaries of annual inspections, details about substantiated abuse or neglect allegations, and any formal regulatory action in place due to non-compliance. This tool does not provide information about current vacancies at any facility. Please contact the facility to ask about availability.

Aging and People with Disabilities website: The APD licensing updates page provides a weekly update on licensed facilities and adult foster homes that have a Restriction on Admission or Order of Immediate Suspension in process. The purpose of this page is to inform the public about these regulatory actions.
