National Public Health Week is April 2-8, 2018. Washington County Department of Health and Human Services will honor significant contributions to public health that promote and support a culture of health and well-being in Washington County.

Any child without the required immunizations or an exemption certificate will not be allowed to attend school or child care on or after that day until they provide documentation of immunizations or exemption.

Registration is open for a six-week series called Powerful Tools for Caregivers that begins February 1, 2018.

After a nationwide recruitment, Randy Covey has been promoted to manager of Washington County Animal Services, which also operates the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter.

From November 1 through March 1, Washington County Public Health monitors the daily air quality for levels of PM2.5, a type of fine air pollution caused in large part by wood smoke. As part of its efforts to improve air quality, in August 2016 Washington County’s Office of Community Development and the Department of Health and Human Services launched a Wood Stove Exchange program to reduce harmful pollution from wood smoke.

Washington County announces updated information on cooling centers for the upcoming weekend and next week.

Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services and Tuality Healthcare have been sponsoring Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week in-person education program, for many years. This fall, they are offering a class for people who are unable to attend the class in person. Caregivers will be able to participate in the class at home using their own computer and internet connection.

Washington County Public Health and Neighborhood Health Center have developed an education room where youth who come to the walk-in clinic can feel safe and comfortable. Also, a Teen Health Expo is scheduled for August 8, 2017.

The Oregon Youth Development Council has awarded Washington County Department of Health and Human Services’ Children, Youth and Families a two-year $200,000 grant. The funds will be used to expand the PAX Good Behavior Game in Washington County elementary schools.

The State Library Board has awarded Early Learning Washington County (ELWC) $100,000 for its “Bridging Cultures — Growing Early Scientists” program, which focuses on expanding the availability of STEM literacy kits countywide. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

Washington County Public Health is reminding people to take precautions over the next few days to avoid heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat stroke and heat exhaustion. A list of cooling center locations follows.

The Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative (OPEC) has awarded $110,000 to Washington County Health and Human Services’ Children, Youth and Families program to support its parenting education hub known as Parenting Together Washington County.

Washington County Environmental Health, Solid Waste & Recycling and OSU Extension Service are hosting a free workshop on Saturday, June 17, 2017 to address two hot topics: food safety and food waste prevention.
