Health officials at Washington County, together with the cities of Hillsboro and Cornelius, are reminding residents of wood smoke ordinances that may affect them.

Register now for the free Family Caregivers Conference on November 18

The event will focus on working together to develop effective strategies to combat and prosecute financial elder abuse. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate how a team approach can help to successfully prosecute these types of crimes.

Through this program, qualifying residents can receive a rebate of $1,500-$3,500 when they replace their old wood stove with a cleaner heating device, such as an electric ductless heat pump, natural gas stove, pellet stove or gas furnace. Some households may qualify for a full-cost (free) replacement, depending on their income.

The $100,000 federal grant will ensure that the growing numbers of immigrant and refugee students and their families in Washington County have the books, programs and supplies they need to be ready for school and prepared to succeed.

Community members of Hillsboro, Tigard, and unincorporated Washington County are invited to provide input on the 2016 Washington County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. The plan is open for a public comment period which runs from August 31 to September 14, 2016.

Health and safety tips for pets during the heat wave

Several organizations are opening their doors or extending hours of operation to help people stay safe and cool over the next few days.

On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, Neighborhood Health Center is hosting a health expo outside of their Hillsboro clinic location, 266 W. Main Street. The event, which takes place from 4-7 p.m., is geared toward those 24 and under.

This educational series is designed to help unpaid family caregivers take care of themselves while they are caring for a relative or friend with a chronic illness.

Telephone lines are down at Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter and Washington County Animal Services. Community is asked to use email to communicate until it's resolved.

In addition to conducting targeted focus groups at senior centers and meal sites around the county, DAVS has created an online survey.

The mental health urgent care center will be a supportive place where adults and youth, including those in crisis, can receive care and assistance in accessing ongoing treatment and other helpful resources.

Registration is now open for several workshops that address reducing access to lethal means ― such as firearms or prescription medications ― for those at risk for suicide.

At their annual conference in Portland last week, the Association of Oregon Recyclers awarded its Recycler of the Year award in the education and promotion program category to the “Eat Smart, Waste Less Challenge.”

Agencies and organizations throughout Washington County will participate in a multi-state earthquake exercise this week. Public guidance about disaster preparedness is available at key websites.

Washington County Public Health is reminding people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

The ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. on May 30 at the Veterans Memorial Gateway in Hillsboro.
