Learn when to seek help for a child showing mental health symptoms. Discover which providers serve individuals on the Oregon Health Plan.

When to get help

People often wonder when to seek help for their child who is having behavioral health symptoms. Consider asking for help if any of the following are present:

  • The child or adolescent is having trouble with normal activities. This may include playing with friends, attending child care or going to school.
  • Parents or caregivers cannot do normal activities because of the child or adolescent's symptoms or behaviors.
  • Symptoms or behaviors do not seem to improve even with the parent or caregiver working to address them.

Help is available. Several agencies in Washington County provide treatment for children and their families. The first step is to have a behavioral health assessment. After the assessment, a clinician will work with the family to decide the best treatment option. Many different services may be recommended. These include:

  • Individual, group and family counseling
  • Skills training
  • Parent education
  • Case management
  • Medication
