Man Arrested After Firing Gun in Bar Parking Lot

On Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 2:42 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies serving the city of Cornelius responded to a shooting at The Jungle Room Bar at 1034 Baseline Street.
Several people called 911 to report that a person was pointing a gun at other bar patrons and then fired several shots into the ground. The suspect left the area in a vehicle. When deputies arrived, they were able to look at surveillance footage and get a description of the suspect and their vehicle.
At 3:11 a.m., a sergeant with the Hillsboro Police Department stopped the suspect vehicle at NW Meek Rd and NW Starr Blvd in Hillsboro. The driver, 42-year-old Michael James Contreas of Tillamook, was taken into custody without incident. Deputies located a gun and several spent bullet casings in the vehicle.
Contreas was transported to the Washington County Jail, where he was charged with the following crimes:
- reckless driving
- driving under the influence of intoxicants
- reckless endangering
- unlawful use of a weapon
- carrying a concealed weapon
- menacing
