On December 8, 2022, Washington County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Commander Caprice Massey graduated from the FBI National Police Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the FBI National Academy offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend, and only 1% of officers in the nation have the opportunity to attend the program.

On average, attendees have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. Attendees recognized by their agencies for their leadership qualities are nominated by their executive teams to participate in the program. Acceptance into the program is by invitation and is through a nomination process. The goal of the FBI National Academy is to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide.

Commander Massey began her law enforcement career with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in July 2004. Since being hired, Commander Massey has risen through the ranks and worked in many different areas throughout the agency. She began as a Corrections Deputy in the Jail and was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant before becoming Commander of the Patrol Division. She has served the Sheriff’s Office in many capacities, including Field Training Officer (FTO), Survival Skills Instructor, Recruitment Sergeant, Jail Lieutenant, and Jail Commander.

Two other Oregon graduates attended the program with Commander Massey, Lieutenant Kate Abraham from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and Commander Erica Hurley from the Portland Police Bureau.

The 284th session of the FBI National Academy consisted of 237 law enforcement officers from 49 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 25 countries, five military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations.
