On Monday, February 17, 2025, at about 1:00 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of shots being fired near SW 159th Avenue and SW Blanton Street in the community of Aloha. The caller reported seeing a man firing two shots toward a vehicle that fled the area.

Arriving deputies searched the area but did not locate a suspect or victim. At about the same time, a second call came into dispatch by a woman who reported her ex-boyfriend harassed her and had a gun. Deputies realized the two incidents were connected.

Deputies learned that 24-year-old Jovanny Tapia-Vasquez of Portland shares custody of a child with the woman who had previously called in. Tapia-Vasquez arrived unannounced, and a brief verbal altercation took place when Tapia-Vasquez discovered the woman had another man visiting.

The visitor was leaving the location when Tapia-Vasquez fired a handgun toward the victim’s vehicle. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from stray bullets.

Deputies could not locate Tapia-Vasquez at the time of the incident and were actively looking for him.

On February 24, 2025, Tapia-Vasquez returned to the location, damaged a vehicle belonging to the same man, and threatened to return with a gun before leaving. Later that day, deputies located Tapia-Vasquez in Portland, where he was arrested. Tapia-Vasquez was transported to the Washington County Jail and booked on multiple charges.

On March 3, 2025, a Washington County Grand Jury indicted Tapia-Vasquez for the following charges:

  • attempted assault in the first degree
  • unlawful use of a weapon
  • criminal mischief in the first degree
  • menacing
  • stalking -two counts
