For the calendar year 2022, two of our deputies were recognized for their outstanding work in keeping our roads safe from alcohol and drug-impaired drivers.
The Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force presented the following awards during their annual Impaired Driving Training Conference held in Canyonville, Oregon, at Seven Feathers Casino and Resort.
2022 DUII Enforcement Officer-Of-The-Year: Deputy Trever Cooley
The DUII Task Force accepts nominations for individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement in DUII deterrence, education, treatment, and enforcement. This award is presented to a sworn police officer from a city police department, county sheriff’s office, or the Oregon State Police.
In 2022, Deputy Trever Cooley made 147 DUII arrests and accounted for many more as a DUII field training officer. Many of these arrests were repeat DUII offenders, including at the felony level. In 2022, Deputy Cooley conducted nearly 1,200 traffic stops, and on one October night in 2022, Deputy Cooley made six DUII arrests in one shift.
Deputy Cooley joins a shortlist as he is a repeat winner of this award. Deputy Cooley was also awarded the same award in 2020.
The Senior Trooper Maria Mignano Dedication To Duty Award: Detective Jason McLaughlin
This award is presented to a sworn law enforcement officer who exemplified the behavior, dedication, and professionalism in all aspects of impaired driving detection, apprehension, and prosecution. This award is named in honor of Senior Trooper Mignano, who tragically lost her life in 2001 and was dedicated to removing impaired drivers from our roadways.
Detective McLaughlin was hired as a patrol deputy in 2004 and was a member of the Traffic Safety Unit from 2008-2014 and again in 2019-2022 before promoting to detective. Detective McLaughlin has accounted for 2126 DUII arrests and has dedicated his career to removing impaired drivers from the roadways.
Additionally, Deputy Cooley and Detective McLaughlin are current members of the Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART), who investigates and reconstructs traffic crashes that often result in the prosecution of felony assault or manslaughter charges. They are also both Field Training Officers and Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructors, where they help train new deputies and seasoned deputies in the administration of SFSTs.
David Beatty, chair of The Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force, said the following about Deputy Cooley and Detective McLaughlin. “It was hard for the DUII Task Force to choose who would receive these awards – we had tons of nominations – but I honestly feel Trever and Jason exemplified the passion, expertise, and just plain hard work that it takes to be a great DUII Officer.”
These awards are highly esteemed honors, and we are thankful to have Deputy Cooley and Detective McLaughlin as members of The Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
