October is National Community Planning Month, following a proclamation approved by the Washington County Board of Commissioners during its regular meeting today (Oct. 1).

National Community Planning Month highlights the importance of planning in our communities and the value of those dedicated to the work of planning.

“National Community Planning Month is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and commitment of our staff, our Planning Commission and the community members who inform and shape our plans,” said Todd Borkowitz, Senior Planner and Planning Commission Liaison.

“Our planning work has local, regional, state and federal implications,” said Michelle Miller, Senior Planner and SNR: A Focused Look Project Manager. “Planning helps us reach the best quality-of-life balance we can for Washington County. It creates the space to receive and consider community feedback.”

Planners balance the need for housing, natural resource protection, transportation and more to create safe and livable communities for our diverse population.

The Development Review/Current Planning team works with developers, consultants and others to make sure development in the unincorporated area meets County, state and Metro codes.

“Part of our role is to help guide and inform landowners and applicants about development options within the context of the Community Development Code,” said Anne Elvers, Senior Planner. “The review process helps ensure community safety and neighborhood livability.”

National Community Planning Month, sponsored by the American Planning Association, highlights the significant impact planning has on growing communities. Read the proclamation.
