October was proclaimed National Community Planning Month by the Washington County Board of Commissioners during its Oct. 2 regular meeting.

National Community Planning Month, sponsored by the American Planning Association (APA), highlights the significant impact community planning has on day-to-day life. This year's theme, "Housing as Community Infrastructure," emphasizes the role community planning plays in creating housing development opportunities.

"Housing is something our Community Planning section is very focused on," said Andrew Singelakis, Director, Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation. "We are particularly focused on creating opportunities for affordable-housing developments, so that everyone has an equal opportunity to live and be successful in Washington County."

LUT's Community Planning staff work directly with community members, organizations, cities and county and state agencies to address land use issues of concern. The community planning process provides all community members an opportunity to participate in the future of Washington County.

"We provide opportunities for people to be part of the community planning process that impacts places where they live, work and play," said Theresa Cherniak, Principal Planner, LUT Community Planning. "We make sure we understand their issues and concerns and to ensure we are all working towards creating viable, socially and economically stable and healthy communities."

Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation is committed to planning and protecting the uses of the land –balancing care for the natural environment, economic development, safety and community livability.
