West Shore Drive weight limited at Hankins slide

West Shore Drive has been weight limited to 10 tons at the Hankins Road landslide due to further settlement of the road.

Only one traffic lane has been open on the road, controlled by a yield sign, since July 2015. The continued settlement, aggravated by the unusual winter weather, may result in the need for a full closure. Weight limiting the roadway will help preserve the road, allowing it to remain open.

The weight limit went into effect Feb. 22 after crews detected additional cracking and deterioration of the road surface. Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation Operations and Maintenance Division crews and park rangers are monitoring the site so that any sudden changes can be addressed immediately.

This portion of West Shore Drive is included in Phase 2 and 3 of the Hagg Lake Perimeter Road Planned Maintenance project. These phases also include guardrail upgrades and six miles of overlay. About $5.8 million of the $8.5 million cost for the West Shore Drive project will be funded through a Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant;the remaining $2.7 million will be funded by the County. Work is expected to start in fall.
