Long-planned improvements on the way!

Washington County's Department of Land Use and Transportation and the City of Hillsboro are holding an Open House TUESDAY, MAY 19, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Orenco Elementary School Cafeteria, 22550 NW Birch Street in Hillsboro. The open house will discuss plans for improvements to NW Cornelius Pass Road between Baseline and the MAX light rail bridge. Staff will share information, answer questions and gather feedback about the design process and specific planned improvements. The private sector consulting engineer CardnoWRG will also be available to answer questions.

Residential and commercial development in the area has increased the traffic load on this road, as planners knew it would. This need was anticipated in the adopted Transportation System Plan. To address these capacity issues, the county and the city are collaborating to complete final design and construct a five-lane roadway.

The proposed Phase 1 improvements include two travel lanes in each direction at NW Quatama Road, an additional southbound right-turn lane onto NW Quatama Road, traffic signal modification, curbs, bike lanes, a storm water drainage system and street lights. It will mean the closure of NW Kian Lane at Cornelius Pass; NW 215th Avenue will be extended to NW Quatama Road.

The second phase will include two travel lanes in each direction from NW Quatama Road to West Baseline. The bridge over Beaverton Creek will be raised and widened. There are also plans for a future signalized four-way intersection at SW Samantha Lane.

The project is funded through a combination of City of Hillsboro and Washington County traffic impact fees and Washington County MSTIP funds. For more details, please contact Abe Turki, Sr. Project Manager, Washington County Capital Project Management, 503-846-7859, [email protected].

Washington County is committed to building and maintaining the best transportation system, ensuring the safety of all roadway users, and operating the county roadway system in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner.
