October is National Community Planning Month

The Washington County Board of Commissioners proclaimed October National Community Planning Month during its Oct. 1 regular meeting.

National Community Planning Month , sponsored by the American Planning Association (APA), highlights the significant impact community planning has on day-to-day life. This year's theme, "Planning for Infrastructure That Benefits All," celebrates the contribution planners make every day.

Planning does not stop at a geographic border. Washington County’s Long Range planners take a broad viewpoint, encompassing regional and statewide perspectives. Planners work with professionals from different fields including public health, recreation and engineering to make communities safer, stronger and healthier.

“Washington County transportation planners focus on the future,” said Erin Wardell, Principal Planner, LUT Transportation Planning. “We look 20 years – or more – into the future to identify transportation infrastructure improvements needed to meet the growing community’s needs.”

LUT planners work directly with community members, organizations, cities and county and state agencies to address land use and transportation issues of concern. The planning process provides all community members an opportunity to participate in the future of Washington County.

"We provide opportunities for people to be part of the community planning process, which impacts the places they live, work and play," said Theresa Cherniak, Principal Planner, LUT Community Planning. "We work to understand their issues and concerns, with the goal of creating viable, healthy and socially and economically stable communities."
