High winds expected, travel safely

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a high wind warning from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday (April 7).

Winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts ranging from 45-55 mph are predicted. The strongest gusts are expected late Saturday morning through the evening.

Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation crews will be out removing downed trees on roadways. Crews will be coordinating and monitoring locations with downed power lines until utility personnel can remove them. All travelers are urged to use caution, as strong winds can create dangerous conditions for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Tips for driving in high winds:

• Watch out for flying debris and downed power lines
• Give the road undivided attention
• Slow down
• Beware of large vehicles, such as semi-trucks and busses. Large vehicles have more "sail area" which catches wind, causing them to shift or tip. Keep a firm grip on the wheel
• Avoid parking under trees or powerlines
