For Immediate Release: Friday, November 18, 2011
Washington County’s Department of Land Use and Transportation announces that Brookwood Avenue between Main Street/Baseline Road and Golden Road has reopened to traffic as of 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011. Improvements to this section of Brookwood are now substantially complete. The contractor will commence work on the section of Brookwood between Golden Road and TV Highway on Monday, November 21, 2011. The entire Brookwood Avenue improvement project (Main Street/Baseline Road to TV Highway) is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2012.
Drivers are advised to expect delays on Brookwood Avenue as the contractor finishes up tasks on the northern section and begins widening the southern section. No closure will be required for construction of the southern portion of the project. However, Brookwood Avenue will have a 25 MPH construction speed limit between Main Street/Baseline Road and TV Highway during the entire duration of the project for the safety of the road crews and commuters. Periodic, temporary lane closures may also be experienced throughout the remainder of the project. Travelers are advised to use alternate routes or plan for longer commute times.
Brookwood Avenue’s northern section was closed for the past six months in order for the contractor to install new Clean Water Services and City of Hillsboro sanitary sewer main lines and to reconstruct the curves on Brookwood Avenue located just north of Golden Road. During this closure, the contractor was also able to widen the northern section and install sidewalks and driveway approaches, which expedited the construction timeline, lessening impacts to the public.
Washington County and the City of Hillsboro appreciate the community’s patience during the construction of this major arterial project.
Background Information:
This project is widening Brookwood Avenue to three lanes (one lane in each direction and a center lane) and adding bike lanes, sidewalks and streetlights between Main Street/Baseline Road and TV Highway. The road improvements are funded through the Washington County Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP). In partnership with Clean Water Services and the City of Hillsboro, the project is also upgrading the sanitary sewer system. Combining the projects results in overall cost savings.
