Board Approves FY 2019-20 Road Maintenance Program

The FY 2019-20 Road Maintenance Program was approved by the Washington County Board of Commissioners during its regular meeting on June 18. The program outlines the Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) road maintenance activities.

Highlights include:

• More than six miles of pavement patching in rural areas
• About 25 miles of chip seal treatments on rural roads
• Over 19 miles of contract paving in the rural area
• Nearly seven miles of paving in the Urban Road Maintenance District

The focus of the program is preventative maintenance. These treatments extend the life of the road and save tax dollars. Over the long term, it is less expensive to maintain pavement than reconstruct it when it fails. Private contractors will do most of the paving on the major roads. County crews will perform ditch maintenance, gravel road maintenance, pavement patching/repairs and chip sealing.

“Our crews go above and beyond, and they take great pride in their work,” said Stephen Roberts, interim director, LUT. “Creating safe roadways for travelers is our top priority.”
