Don’t put temporary signs in the public right-of-way

We consider removing signs if they interfere with road work or are a risk to safety.
Media release

If you plan to show your support for a political campaign with a sign this election season, make sure you place it on private property. Unauthorized temporary signs are not allowed in the public right-of-way.

State ORS 368.942(Link is external) and Washington County RO98-197(Link downloads document) allow us to remove unauthorized signs in unincorporated Washington County right-of-way without notice. This includes:

  • Political signs
  • Real Estate signs
  • Garage sale signs
  • Signs attached to structures like signposts or utility poles and cabinets

Unauthorized roadside signs can block sight-distance, traffic devices and/or access to sidewalks.

We remove signs as resources allow. The sign content is not a factor in whether we remove it or not. If we remove one of your signs, you may be able to claim it for up to 30 days. Learn more.
