Washington County Housing Authority Turns 40 Years Old

The Housing Authority of Washington County will celebrate its 40th Anniversary on August 4, 2010. The Washington County Board of County Commissioners recognized the event with a proclamation at the August 3 Board meeting, and clients who visit the office on Wednesday August 4 will be greeted with balloons, cookies and coloring books for the children for the organization's auspicious "birthday."

The Housing Authority of Washington County was formed on August 4, 1970, by the Washington County Board of County Commissioners, to provide affordable housing opportunities to help break the cycle of poverty and improve the quality of life in our community. The goal of the Housing Authority of Washington County is to provide decent, safe, and affordable housing for low-income families, veterans, elderly, disabled and homeless persons residing in Washington County.

The Housing Authority of Washington County owns 243 units of public housing, 2,765 units of subsidized rental housing, 521 units of affordable rental housing, and has assisted in the development of over 2,000 additional units of affordable rental housing for low-income Washington County residents.

The provision and maintenance of secure, affordable, accessible housing for vulnerable and low-income residents are vital to the health, safety, and prosperity of the entire community. The Housing Authority of Washington County has provided affordable housing and support for forty years, and will continue to strive to provide affordable, accessible housing and supportive programs that help all Washington County residents achieve stability and move towards self-sufficiency.
