Washington County hosts Veterans Day ceremony and art workshop

The public is invited to Washington County's annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, 11 a.m.-noon, at the Washington County Veterans Memorial, NE Veterans Drive and NE 34th Avenue, Hillsboro. Parking is available at the TriMet Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport stop. The event will take place rain or shine, with covered seating available.

Oregon House Representative Janeen Sollman will be this year’s host. Rep. Sollman represents the 30th District, which covers northern Hillsboro, North Plains and the surrounding area. Commissioner Jerry Willey will be the keynote speaker and is a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam era. Additionally, U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici will be in attendance. Congresswoman Bonamici has represented the First Congressional District of Oregon since February of 2012, which includes Washington, Yamhill, Clatsop and Columbia counties and part of Multnomah County.

The ceremony is sponsored by Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services (DAVS), in partnership with Memorial Fund for Veterans of Washington County, VFW Post 2666 and American Legion Post 6. For more information, call 503-846-3060.

On Saturday, November 16, DAVS is partnering with Oregon Society of Artists to present Welcome Home: A Veteran Art Workshop from 12-3:30 p.m. at the Hillsboro Brookwood Library. Hear stories and see artwork created by veterans who have used art to connect with their community and explore their creativity after returning home from service.

All supplies are provided free of charge by Blick Art Materials. Pizza and other refreshments will be provided. Immediate family members, children and friends of veterans are welcome to join. For more information and to RSVP for the event, call 503-846-3051.
