Sponsored by: Health and Human Services Department, Animal Services Division

Waiting for a home in an animal shelter can seem like a long time in dog years. Especially when you're a senior-aged dog.

The Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter has an unusually high number of middle-aged and senior dogs looking for great homes. Through May 26, older dogs (ages 6 and up) will have their adoption fees reduced by 50% to just $75.

"Senior dogs can take longer than others to find a great home – so we're having a special adoption rate to help them out," says Deborah Wood, manager of Animal Services for Washington County.

"These dogs are all spayed or neutered, current on their vaccines, microchipped, and come with a one-year license," says Wood. "There is nothing more rewarding, more joyful, than adopting a senior pet. These animals know you have saved them, and they have a loyalty and depth that no younger dog can match."

The shelter has a wide range of sizes, personalities and energy levels among its senior dogs. There's one to fit almost any household.

"This is Be Kind to Animals Week – there can be no kinder action that giving an old dog a soft spot to spend his senior years," says Wood.

You can see photos of adoptable pets by going to the shelter web site at www.washingtoncountypets.com.
