Dog Adoption Program Reopens

The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter dog adoption program is open again after being closed since Thursday.

Several dogs at the shelter had come down with an upper respiratory infection – similar to a bad cold – and the shelter staff wanted to medicate the dogs that were ill and take precautions to limit the spread of the infection.

"The dogs that had been under the weather responded wonderfully to the antibiotics, and are wagging their tails, waiting for their new homes," says Deborah Wood, Manager of Animal Services for Washington County.

Dogs that appear to have fully recovered from the illness are up for adoption. There are more dogs currently being treated, and others who were exposed to the illness but have not yet shown symptoms, that are being evaluated and will come up for adoption over the next several days.

"Because of this backlog, we're going to have a larger-than-average number of dogs looking for homes over the next week or two," says Wood. "This is a great time to come and see our dogs, and select the right pet for your family."

The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter is located at 1901 SE 24th Avenue in Hillsboro, just off the Tualatin Highway by Lowe's and Home Depot. Dog and cat adoption hours are 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and from noon to 5:30 on Wednesdays.

Dog adoption fees are $150. All dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption, have a microchip, are up-to-date on shots, and receive a free one-year Washington County license.
