Caregiver Conference

President Barack Obama proclaimed November 2009 as National Family Caregivers Month. "The true strength of the American Family finds roots in an unwavering commitment to care for one another. Whether caring for a parent, relative, or child, our Nation's caregivers selflessly devote their time and energy to the well-being of those they look after. During National Family Caregivers Month, we honor the individuals providing essential services to family members who could not otherwise look after themselves."

To offer thanks and encouragement to family caregivers, "Caregiving in Tough Times," a day-long conference for caregivers is being offered on Friday, November 20, 2009. This conference is free.

Some of the highlights of the day include: Protecting seniors from fraud, Althea Rodgers, Oregon Department of Justice; Managing medications, Jeff Fortner, Pacific University, School of Pharmacy; How to help without getting hurt, Alice Ellison, Tuality Healthcare Physical Therapist; Safe passage: Home Safety with a focus on Alzheimer's, Mary Platt, Occupational Therapist and Dementia Specialist; How to care for yourself while caring for another, Kay Kirkbride, RN and Sandy Madsen, RN.; plus a panel of representatives from various agencies will discuss how to find help in the community.

Rev. Larry Hansen, Chaplain and Volunteer Coordinator, Legacy Hopewell House Hospice will offer a keynote address with a hopeful look at the emotional and spiritual journey caregivers embark on. A free boxed lunch will be provided for all attendees.

This community event will take place at Tuality Health Education Center, 334 SE 8th Ave, Hillsboro. It begins at 9:00 am with refreshments and ends at 2:00 pm. A resource fair with representatives of community service agencies and organizations will be held in the lobby throughout the morning.

This event is sponsored by Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Service (DAVS), Family Caregiver Support Program, OSU Extension Service and Tuality Healthcare.

Reservations are requested so that materials and lunches can be prepared. To reserve your space or for more information, please call DAVS at 503-615-4676.
