The Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter was surprised at what hopped in last week - nine stray bunnies.

"They were brought in by a law enforcement officer, and no one has claimed them," says Deborah Wood, Manager of Animal Services for Washington County.

While the shelter usually only has cats and dogs looking for homes, the rabbits are now up for adoption.

All of the bunnies are young, friendly and would make good pets. "They've all been spayed or neutered by our veterinarian, so if you adopt one or two rabbits, you'll end up with one or two rabbits," says Wood.

The adoption fee is $10. The rabbits have all been microchipped and come with care instructions.

You can see photos of all adoptable pets (including the rabbits) at www.washingtoncountypets.com. Click on the Petfinder link near the bottom of the page.

Location: Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter, 1901 SE 24th Avenue in Hillsboro (on TV Hwy right by Lowe's and Home Depot). Adoption Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 12:00-5:30 PM, closed Sunday.
