Recently, Washington County Emergency Managers hosted an Open House of the County's Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The EOC is designed to serve as the coordinating hub and nerve center for the County's response efforts to any type of natural or man-made disaster, even the proverbial zombie apocalypse.
In the event of a large scale incident, full-time emergency managers are joined in the EOC by other county staff whose normal duties are shifted to assist with tasks such as:
- Developing and implementing specific strategies to resolve the event,
- Procuring supplies and resources that are needed,
- Coordinating with other allied agencies,
- Disseminating public information, and
- Tracking and managing the financial impact of a disaster.
The Open House was an opportunity to raise awareness with staff and others not familiar with the EOC about the importance of the work that is carried out there during a community-wide disaster. County employees were also urged to plan for emergencies at home and in their personal lives which will directly impact their ability to report for work as soon as possible to assist in disaster response efforts.
During the Open House, a video was created to help describe the work of the EOC, provide "readiness" advice, and to document a "surprise" appearance by a confused but friendly zombie who happened to wander in. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes to enjoy this short film featuring the debut of Sheriff's Office Explorer Scout Kaitlyn Holt as our resident zombie, as she too learns some important lessons.
