Washington County Celebrates Juneteenth
Last week, the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 19, 2022 as Juneteenth, encouraging County residents to join them in recognition of the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and Black Americans living in the state first learned that they had been freed from slavery. As noted by Board Chair Kathryn Harrington, “Observance of Juneteenth honors the legacy of those who received the joyous news on that unforgettable day in Galveston. It also provides an opportunity for all community members to reflect on the historical significance of Juneteenth and our continuing efforts to eliminate institutional racism and advance equity and inclusion for all people.”
In addition to the Board proclamation, Washington County also held a ceremony earlier today when the Juneteenth flag was officially raised at the Public Services Building. The flag will now fly through Tuesday, June 21. Last November, the Board of Commissioners also passed a resolution and order which designated Juneteenth as a paid county holiday.
