Dec. 14 Event Will Dedicate Veterans Drive and Gateway at Fairgrounds

A new roadway in Hillsboro will be dedicated to Washington County's estimated 38,000 veterans at an event in the southern portion of the Fair Complex this Tuesday, December 14, at 2 p.m.

Washington County Board of Commissioners Chairman Tom Brian and Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey will join representatives of the Oregon National Guard and the local veterans community to conduct the ceremony.

City officials plan to name Veterans Drive, formerly known as the Grant Street Extension, in honor of those who currently serve or have served in the military. Once completed, the roadway will run from N.E. 28th Avenue on the west side of the fairgrounds to N.E. Brookwood Parkway. A pathway, to be called Veterans Gateway, will also be dedicated to veterans near a planned roundabout just north of the Park and Ride at the Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport MAX station.

The new roadway will one day carry vehicles and pedestrians past a new National Guard Readiness Center, as well as a Veterans Memorial Plaza at the fairgrounds. These additions to the fairgrounds are envisioned in the master plan for the 101-acre property.
