Board of Commissioners issue Juneteenth Proclamation
On Tuesday, June 15, the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 19, 2021 as Juneteenth in Washington County. Often referred to as our country’s second independence day, the celebration marks the date when enslaved Africans in the State of Texas finally learned of their emancipation on June 19, 1865. Observance of Juneteenth honors the legacy of those who first received the joyous news on that unforgettable day in Galveston. It also provides an opportunity for all community members to reflect on the historical significance of Juneteenth and our continuing efforts to eliminate institutional racism and advance equity and inclusion for all people.
