Child Abuse Prevention Month - April 2011
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
This is the first year for Washington County to plan activities to educate, assess, and improve the County's coordinated community response to child abuse prevention. Local public safety partners include DHS-Child Welfare, the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Washington County Commission on Children and Families and Healthy Start.
In order to raise awareness about the tragedy of child deaths related to abuse and neglect, several communities within Washington County have agreed to display a "Children's Memorial Flag" from the Child Welfare League of America. In addition, several municipalities have agreed to issue proclamations to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention Month. To date, the communities of Banks, Beaverton, Durham, Forest Grove, Gaston, Hillsboro, King City, North Plains, Tigard, and Tualatin have all agreed to participate. The Washington County public safety partners will serve to promote awareness by supporting citizen education and uniting members of this community in efforts of child maltreatment prevention.
In this first year, the "Stand United to Prevent Child Abuse" event will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Beaverton City Library lawn to honor our young victims and provide community awareness.
