In celebration of Black History Month and this year’s theme of “Black Resistance,” the Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation designating February as Black History Month.

At their business meeting on February 7, the Board heard a presentation by Lakayana Drury, founder and executive director of Word is Bond, a Portland-based organization that empowers young Black men to realize their fullest potential. Drury encouraged the Board to not only focus on Black history but also Black futures, as the County works to create a welcoming community for all.

The proclamation was read into the record by Clean Water Services Laboratory Manager Karen Chichetu and her daughter Kayleigh, a sophomore at Westview High School. The proclamation celebrates and affirms the many ways that Black Americans have resisted historic and ongoing racial discrimination, oppression and mistreatment over hundreds of years. The Board encourages all County residents to reflect and learn about Black history and Black resistance in our country, state and local community.
