In 1976 during the United States' bicentennial, Black History Month was recognized by Gerald Ford and the federal government. President Ford urged all Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout history."

This proclamation dedicates February 1 – February 28, 2013, as National African American History Month in Washington County, in recognition of the contributions African American members of our communities have made in Washington County.
