In celebration of Black History Month and this year’s theme of “African Americans and Labor,” the Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation designating February as Black History Month.

At their business meeting on January 28, the proclamation was read into the record by Alicia Sojourner, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, Grace Zarpak, Staff Assistant to the Chair and Trenard May, Housing Equity Coordinator.

The proclamation celebrates and affirms the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – intersect with the collective experiences of Black people and have helped to shape our country, state, and region.

The Board encourages all county residents to reflect on and learn about Black history, the many significant contributions of African Americans to the built landscape, found in every part of the nation, and their legacy of leadership in various labor movements to ensure the rights of all workers.
